We are recruiting for a full-time Director of Radiation Safety position as an employee of our client, Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. The position requires being on-site in Cambridge, MA.  Relocation assistance within the US is available. This is one of over 50 current EHS positions being recruited for nationwide.

What you will be doing:
Reporting to the Managing Director Environmental Health and Safety, the Director of Radiation Safety will be responsible for the management, overall direction and oversight of Radiation Safety programs to support the facility.
You will implement, audit and continuously improve Radiation Safety practices, policies and procedures with the goal of achieving the highest levels of protection for employees and company assets

Minimum requirements for the position are:

Unrestricted authorization to work for any employer in the United States.
Ability to commute or relocate to Cambridge, MA on a daily basis.
B.S. in health physics, nuclear engineering, occupational health, environmental management, or a related scientific/technical discipline.
Minimum of 10 years of related work experience managing EHS personnel, programs, and budgets, with significant experience specific to radiation safety programs.
Must meet (or be able to meet within a reasonable period) the education, training, and experience requirements set by the state Department of Public Health to serve as an RSO on a Broad Scope license.
Proven experience leading, motivating, and coaching technical and administrative teams.

Additional preferred competencies include:Master’s or Ph.D. in radiological sciences or an equivalent advanced degree.
Additional professional certifications (e.g., Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)).
Advanced training or operational experience within a fast-paced laboratory research environment.
Experience navigating environments with organized labor.

Primary responsibilities include:
The Director promotes safe, prudent practices across all research and laboratory environments, working closely with technical specialists, university leadership, and the Radiation Safety Committee. This role balances strategic compliance with an innovative, client-centered approach, serving as the institution’s primary representative to external regulatory and public safety agencies.
Serve as the designated Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) on the university’s Broad Scope Radioactive Material License.
Lead operational planning, program assessments, and continuous improvements for the RSS program.
Coordinate safety services with key academic and research departments (including FAS, HMS, HSDM, SPH, SEAS) and affiliated institutions.
Develop and maintain systems, tools, and layered engineering/administrative controls to help laboratories recognize and manage radiation risks.
Lead fact-finding, incident investigations, and remedial actions regarding radiation concerns. Ensure RSS fully supports the university-wide EHS inspection program.
Oversee the development, implementation, and tracking of comprehensive radiation safety training for laboratory personnel and management.
Lead laboratory emergency planning, preparedness, response, and after-action reviews.
Recruit, mentor, and coach a professional team of managerial, technical, and administrative staff, fostering a collaborative, learning-oriented culture.
Develop and manage the RSS budget to ensure cost-effective service delivery; collaborate with EHS Central Management on cost-allocation and cost-recovery initiatives.

Salary range: $170,000 to $200,000
