In preparation for your upcoming training, I would ask you to review the attachments and the instructions below.
- The training meeting link is below for the first day.
- If you are working from a laptop or single monitor, you may find it best to print up all the attachments. If you choose to participate on multiple monitors, at a minimum, it will still be necessary to print up the student manual to participate in the exercises.
- I will refer to attachments during the training….. “please refer to the SW SG Code attachment” , “please refer to the P001 attachment” etc etc. The more familiar you are with this information, the easier it will be for you to follow.
Reference documents attached:
- Student manual – must be printed so you can participate in the exercises.
- IMDG DGL Extracts – this is a sheet of the UN number entries needed to complete the course in a layout as it would appear in the IMDG Code dangerous goods list (DGL).
- 49CFR Extracts – Entries from the 172.101 Hazmat Table with additional information is given so you can learn how to identify Hazardous Substances (Reportable Quantity “RQ”) as well as poisonous inhalation hazards (PIH’s). There is also some vessel stowage information.
- Example of a Packing Instruction (P001) – and also the full list of the segregation groups by UN number and relevant chapters on Limited Quantities and Excepted Quantities.
- Segregation Chart, Stowage Codes and Segregation Codes
- The US DOT Chart 17 – for placards, labels, and marks. Please note: unless you have access to a color printer, keep as an attachment for the course and for future use.
- IMDG A.42 Detailed summary of changes – INFORMATIONAL ONLY and no need to print for the course.
Note:
- that 49CFR is freely available online at:
https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/subtitle-B/chapter-I/subchapter-C
This link is for all federal titles but we are concerning ourselves with “Transportation” so use the dropdown menu to pick Title 49. (Perhaps practice navigating your way (or use the search option which is easier) to “172.101 Purpose and use of the hazardous materials table” and read the preamble to the Hazardous Material table then scroll through the table to become familiar.) However, there is enough information in the attachments for the course.
There is also the oCFR tool:
https://portal.phmsa.dot.gov/ocfrTool/cfr
- You won’t need it for the course, but as an FYI, the DOT Emergency Response Guide 2024 (the latest publication) is freely available on your smart device.
