We all love stories. Yet we fail to use them in our safety/risk communications. The science of narratives and stories brings light to how they are especially powerful in affecting risk perceptions. Creative nonfiction narrative (CNF) is used in many venues including science communication, long form writing, and presentations to lawmakers. This session will help attendees better understand why their people pay more attention to narratives over data. Information will demonstrate how: a) much more memorable narrative is over traditional info-centric training); b) to create CNF; and c) to emphasize the key points. Some of the questions to be explored are: 1) How risk always plays a part of any good story? 2) Why stories spread so much wider than data or info?; 3) How to use stories more effectively to communicate risk?; and 4) What are the elements needed for a great story?

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:

  • Explain how narrative is more memorable than information-based training.
  • Describe the overall approach to creative nonfiction.
  • Explain how and why emotional stories have an effect on us.
  • Describe the science and research behind narratives and stories.
  • Use stories and narratives to enhance risk perceptions.
  • Apply CNF in future IH training.
