This e-learning course is designed to provide initial introduction and review of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) regulations governing the safe transportation and disposal of radioactive materials in an easy, self-paced format. The web-based training includes detailed information relating to the definitions, calculations and requirements for the shipment of radioactive materials in accordance with DOT’s 49 CFR, and acceptance criteria for radioactive commercial disposal sites per NRC’s IE Notice 79-19. Practical exercises are utilized that allow participants to apply the concepts of the training as it is being discussed. Regulations and handouts will be provided in PDF format to facilitate completing the course.

This course is especially effective as either an introduction for a new or inexperienced shipper, or as a thorough review for experienced shippers who desire refresher training to satisfy their Nuclear Regulatory Commission IE Bulletin 79-19 guidance for periodic retraining and their DOT HazMat Employee training. Suggested attendees include Radioactive Waste Technicians and Supervisors; Health Physicists and Technicians, Industrial hygiene; Radioactive Waste QA/QC personnel, or Engineering personnel who are responsible to certify radioactive waste shipments. AAHP has awarded forty (40) CEUs for this class.

Successful participants receive a certification stating that the training meets the requirements of 49 CFR 172 Subpart H and NRC IE Notice 79-19. Successful completion is achieved with an overall average passing score of 80% or better on all 9 module exams.

Course Topics include: Identify and Classify Radioactive Material & Waste; Determine Most Appropriate Shipping Description; Package Radioactive Material or Waste for Transportation; Apply Correct Markings, Labels, Placards , Shipping Papers and Emergency Response; Identify Waste Generator Responsibilities; Waste Classification and Manifesting; Radiation & Contamination Shipping Limits; Disposal & Processing Options; Operating Experience/Lessons Learned; and Transportation Security.

This is a math intensive class and strongly recommend having a calculator to use throughout this Radioactive Waste Shipping course.
